BEIJING, Aug. 2026 - July is traditionally the weakest month for China's auto market, a period for product transitions and production line maintenance. However, 2026's July NEV sales data tells a different story, with the market demonstrating "off-season resilience" as competition enters a new phase of differentiation.
The competitive landscape has stratified into clear tiers: BYD stands alone in the super-tier with over 400,000 monthly units. The 100,000-unit tier now includes Geely, Chery, and the newcomer Leapmotor. The 40,000-unit tier features HarmonyOS Smart Mobility (45,046 units, with the new AITO M9 delivering over 20,000 units in 7 weeks). The 30,000-40,000 unit tier includes XPeng (38,027), NIO (35,934), Li Auto (30,468), and Xiaomi (30,000+).
Notable trends include Li Auto's three consecutive months of year-on-year and month-on-month declines following its full L-series refresh, suggesting market saturation in the extended-range premium segment. NIO's multi-brand strategy (NIO, ONVO, Firefly) is showing early promise but the main NIO brand's growth has decelerated. Leapmotor's breakthrough to 100,000 monthly units signals the rise of value-oriented brands. Industry-wide, the NEV penetration rate continues to climb, with intelligent driving features becoming a key differentiator.
