Hunan province exported 219,000 vehicles in the first eight months of 2026, up 62.5% year-on-year to a record high, according to Changsha Customs. The export value reached 27.96 billion yuan, up 30.7%, accounting for 12.6% of the province's total export value over the period.
Passenger cars dominated, with 193,000 units shipped (up 71.4%) making up 87.9% of the province's auto exports and 15.01 billion yuan in value (up 37.9%). Commercial-vehicle exports reached 26,497 units, up 17.7%, worth 12.95 billion yuan (up 23.3%).
New-energy demand drove the outward push. Hunan exported 92,367 electric vehicles in the eight months, up 53.4% and representing 42.1% of all vehicle exports, with a value of 9.75 billion yuan (up 21.4%). Plug-in hybrid passenger cars reached 46,837 units (up 33.9%) while pure-electric passenger cars hit 42,490 units — a sharp 78.5% increase. Even electric buses (10 seats and above) saw export value jump 177.2% to 280 million yuan.
Private enterprises were the absolute主力, accounting for 99.3% of export volume with 218,000 vehicles (up 64.9%). Markets diversified quickly: exports to Belarus reached 47,818 units (up 185.6%), Malaysia 44,958 and Russia 19,581 (up 536.4%), while emerging destinations such as Armenia, Cambodia and Egypt grew several-fold.
The province shows a dual-core pattern led by Changsha and Xiangtan, which together account for 86.4% of Hunan's auto export value. Xiangtan exported 113,696 vehicles (up 141.7%) with Geely the top exporter by volume, while Changsha — anchored by BYD — led in NEV passenger-car export value at 16.96 billion yuan.
