China's automobile exports reached 1.01 million units in August, up 65.3% year-on-year, marking the third consecutive month that monthly exports have exceeded 1 million units, according to the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers.
Cumulative exports for January–August hit 7.153 million units, up 66.7% year-on-year. New-energy vehicles (NEVs) were the standout: August NEV exports reached 526,000 units, up 1.3 times (134.6%) year-on-year, and NEV exports have accounted for more than 50% of total auto exports for three straight months.
Analysts say the structural shift means roughly one in every two vehicles China exports is now an NEV, signalling that the country's auto-export growth is being led by new-energy models rather than traditional combustion-engine cars.
The data reinforces a broader trend in which Chinese automakers are transitioning from "following" to "leading" in the global auto market, with NEVs and core components such as batteries increasingly central to export competitiveness.
