South Korean President Lee Jae-myung: To Confiscate Assets of Pro-Japanese Collaborators

   2026-08-18 CCTV.com20

South Korean President Lee Jae-myung said on the 15th that the government will investigate and recover assets illicitly amassed by pro-Japanese anti-national actors and hold them historically accountable.

Speaking at the 81st Liberation Day ceremony at the Sejong Center, Lee said that with the special law enacted on June 2, the government will more responsibly manage pro-Japanese assets returned to state ownership, ensuring they are fully used to honor and support independence contributors and their descendants.

In December 2005, the National Assembly first passed a special law bringing assets obtained through pro-Japanese acts during the Japanese colonial period into the scope of state recovery, and in July 2006 established the "Committee on Investigation of Pro-Japanese Anti-National Actors' Assets." But because the law limited the committee's term to four years, it was dissolved in 2010 and no dedicated body followed.

To address this, the government pushed for re-legislation this year. The National Assembly passed the new special law on May 7, and it was enacted on June 2, taking effect on Dec 2. Under the law, the dissolved committee will be reconstituted and may operate for up to five years.
