Anthropic Says Claude Advanced a Major Math Problem, Raising Riemann Zeta Zero Bound to 67.2 Percent

   2026-08-12 Anthropic / AI Native Foundatiadmin40

Anthropic announced on August 10 that an unreleased research version of its Claude model made progress on a problem related to the Riemann hypothesis, increasing the proven lower bound for the fraction of Riemann zeta function zeros that satisfy the hypothesis from 41.6 percent to 67.2 percent.

While the model did not solve the Riemann hypothesis itself, the result represents a meaningful advance on a longstanding open mathematical problem. Anthropic highlighted the potential of AI systems to contribute to frontier mathematics research.

The announcement is part of a broader wave of AI labs applying large language models to unsolved problems in mathematics and theoretical computer science, fueling debate over the role of machine intelligence in scientific discovery.
