Germany, Europe's largest car market, registered more than 78,600 new pure-electric vehicles in July, up nearly 62% year on year and lifting the BEV share of new registrations to 29.3% — the second consecutive month that electric cars were the single largest powertrain type in the country.
Including plug-in hybrids, externally chargeable vehicles accounted for 40.7% of all new registrations, according to data published by the KBA (Kraftfahrt-Bundesamt, the Federal Motor Transport Authority) on 6 August. The authority noted that Germany's BEV parc surpassed 2 million units in early 2026, roughly 60 times the level recorded in 2017.
The strength of Europe's biggest market is seen as a bellwether for the region's broader electric transition. Industry observers say the recovery reflects a combination of renewed purchase incentives, a wider range of affordable models and easing comparison bases from a weak 2025.
