According to Al Jazeera, on the 15th Zimbabwe police said the death toll from the Aug 11 boat capsizing had risen to 72 after rescue workers recovered 26 more bodies from Lake Kariba.
Citing Zimbabwe Broadcasting Corporation (ZBC), the report said at least 18 of the victims were children, 16 of them under the age of 10.
A police investigation shows the boat was overloaded when it capsized. The disaster management authority said 77 people were rescued after the capsizing, some of whom were taken to hospital.
The search and rescue operation is ongoing. As previously reported, a boat suddenly encountered strong winds and capsized on Lake Kariba on the afternoon of the 11th. President Mnangagwa has declared the incident a "national disaster."
