Google AI Chief Jeff Dean Departs After 27 Years to Found AI Startup Discovery Loop

   2026-08-11 Qianjiang Evening News / Indusadmin40

Google AI Chief Scientist Jeff Dean announced his departure after 27 years at the company to co-found AI startup Discovery Loop, focused on AI-driven scientific research automation. Dean, one of the most influential figures in AI and machine learning, co-founded the venture with three other Google technology veterans.

Concurrently, Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis transitioned to the role of DeepMind chairman and Alphabet Chief Scientist, focusing on AGI long-term strategy and accelerating scientific breakthroughs. The leadership reshuffle at Alphabet's AI division sent shares down approximately 3.5 percent.

The departures come amid intensifying competition in the AI industry, with OpenAI and Anthropic challenging Google's position in frontier model development. The moves also reflect a broader trend of top AI researchers leaving established tech giants to pursue independent ventures, as the race toward artificial general intelligence accelerates.
