YIWU, Zhejiang - The 2026 FIFA World Cup marks a turning point for Yiwu's manufacturing model. Unlike previous tournaments where Yiwu factories primarily competed on price through low-cost OEM production, this year's merchants are pursuing a different strategy: original design, copyright licensing, and brand development.
Companies like Juxing Power have secured official national team IP authorizations, producing licensed merchandise that commands significantly higher margins than unbranded alternatives. The shift is supported by data: Yiwu's sports goods exports exceeded 10 billion yuan for the first time in 2025, with unit values rising alongside volume growth - indicating that value addition, not just scale, is driving growth.
The evolution extends beyond sports merchandise. Across categories from holiday decorations to household goods, Yiwu manufacturers are investing in R&D, design capabilities, and brand registration. The Yiwu International Commodities Fair has increasingly become a platform for showcasing innovation rather than just low prices. The city's 2026 cross-border e-commerce boom, exceeding 100 billion yuan in the first half, has been partly fueled by branded products sold directly to consumers through platforms like TikTok Shop, Amazon, and Temu.
This transformation positions Yiwu not just as the world's factory for small commodities, but increasingly as a global design and branding hub for consumer goods.
