The annual meeting of the AI for Health Global Initiative 2026 opened on September 16 in Hangzhou and runs through September 18. Initiated by the World Health Organization, the International Telecommunication Union and the World Intellectual Property Organization, the meeting is organized by China's National Health Commission Health Development Research Center and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology.

As of August, China's grassroots medical and health institutions had deployed 19 smart applications, according to NHC officials, illustrating the country's growing footprint in AI-enabled healthcare. The meeting focuses on international coordination of AI medical applications and governance, exploring standardized pathways for the regulated use of AI in grassroots healthcare and health management.

The choice of China as host underscores how the scale and governance practices of the country's AI-in-health rollout are drawing global attention. Delegates are examining how AI can be deployed responsibly across primary care, chronic-disease management and public health, while safeguarding data and algorithmic safety.

The event sits alongside a busy September calendar of Chinese AI governance milestones — including the release of the AI Safety Governance Framework 3.0 and a China-ASEAN AI ministers' roundtable — reflecting a coordinated push to pair rapid AI adoption with trustworthy, internationally aligned governance.
