Yiwu, known as the "world's capital of small commodities," is quietly transforming how its goods go global — by weaving intellectual-property (IP) protection into the entire export process.
At the Yiwu Intellectual Property Rights Protection Service Center, the country's only county-level local platform for guiding overseas IP dispute response, staff monitor trademarks across 197 jurisdictions, covering 100 going-global enterprises and 327 core trademarks. To date the center has identified 229 suspected squatted trademarks, provided 91 targeted interventions, tracked 574 overseas disputes, served 2,502 enterprises and helped recover or save more than 100 million yuan in costs.
A fast-track design-patent channel now grants approvals in an average of 7–10 working days, down from four to five months, giving local makers such as toy producers timely protection for fast-iterating products.
Yiwu has also published 138 group standards for small commodities, including 79 translated into English, Arabic and other languages. One pet-supplies firm reported a 30% sales increase on a single cat-litter product after adopting bilingual standards that cut communication costs with foreign buyers.
The Yiwu Brand Development Promotion Association, grouping more than 240 member enterprises, is helping smaller firms "go out" together rather than alone.
