BYD has announced plans to launch vehicle models equipped with solid-state batteries in 2027, the company said recently, adding that it currently leads the field in both technology and commercialization and is focusing on the sulfide-based all-solid-state route.
BYD is not alone. Industry leaders including CATL (Contemporary Amperex Technology) and Gotion High-Tech have also scheduled small-batch production or demonstration vehicle installations of all-solid-state batteries for 2027, opening a full-scale commercialization race for the next-generation technology.
Solid-state batteries promise higher energy density, improved safety and longer life than today's lithium-ion cells, and are widely seen as a potential game-changer for electric-vehicle range and charging performance.
The competition comes as China's "15th Five-Year Plan for Intelligent Connected New Energy Vehicles" for the first time includes capacity early-warning and regulation for power batteries, signalling that Beijing wants orderly, high-quality expansion of the battery sector rather than unchecked build-out.
