According to data released by the China Association of Automobile Manufacturers (CAAM) on September 10, 2026, China's new energy vehicle production and sales in August reached 1.653 million and 1.643 million units respectively, up 18.9% and 17.8% year on year.
The NEV share of total new vehicle sales hit a record 60.6%, while the cumulative share for the first eight months of 2026 rose to 52.4%. The data confirms NEVs continue to dominate China's auto market.
Meanwhile, traditional fuel vehicle domestic sales declined 45.7% year on year to 584,000 units in August, marking the third consecutive month of near-50% contraction. For every 10 vehicles sold in China, approximately 6 are now new energy vehicles.
CAAM deputy secretary-general Chen Shihua said China's auto exports are shifting toward "new energy vehicle-led" growth, opening global markets through electrification technology.
