According to data released by the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA) on September 8, 2026, new energy vehicle (NEV) retail sales in China reached 1.005 million units in August 2026, with the NEV penetration rate hitting a historic high of 65.2%, up 9.9 percentage points year on year.
The data shows that all top ten retail models were NEVs, with traditional fuel vehicles completely absent from the list for the second time this year. High oil prices have continued to accelerate the shift from fuel vehicles to electric vehicles, with fuel vehicle retail sales dropping 40% year on year.
The CPCA noted that the structural shift is being driven by multiple factors: high oil prices suppressing fuel vehicle demand, replacement demand squeezing first-time purchase demand, and intelligent driving technology becoming the third most important purchase decision factor after range and charging convenience.
Analysts said the August data confirms that China's auto market is undergoing an irreversible structural transformation, with NEVs becoming the dominant force.
