Foreign visitors to China have entered a "China Haul 4.0" era in which they no longer just buy souvenirs but hunt for smart gadgets and personalized, custom-made products to carry home, China News Service reported on October 20 — and Yiwu's markets have become one of the main stages for the trend.
The report describes overseas shoppers filling suitcases with AI-powered toys, smart-home gadgets and niche accessories sourced from Yiwu's stalls, drawn by the sheer variety of the world's largest small-commodity market and the speed with which vendors can customize designs. Personalized customization and the new generation of AI-enabled products have become the biggest draws, with many visitors filming their shopping trips for social media back home.
Analysts say the phenomenon turns individual tourists into informal brand ambassadors and distribution channels, complementing the bulk trade flows that Yiwu is traditionally known for, and giving small merchants a low-cost way to test which products resonate with overseas consumers before scaling up exports.
