On the 18th local time, the World Health Organization convened an emergency committee meeting. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is spreading rapidly, with a still-high risk of further domestic and international transmission. The outbreak has become the second-largest Ebola epidemic on record, and is spreading faster than any previous Ebola outbreak. Prevention and control still require accelerated data sharing, stronger surveillance, sustained funding and enhanced cross-border coordination. Tedros said nearly 5,000 people have been infected and more than 2,300 have died; the outbreak has reached many parts of the DRC and is far from under control, with undiscovered transmission chains still present. Two vaccines specifically designed against the Bundibugyo type of Ebola virus have entered human trials, while another vaccine has shown cross-protective effects in animal tests.
