On September 21, Unitree released its Dex5-S dexterous hand, a single hand integrating 22 degrees of freedom and 22 motors, with overall dimensions (102×187×26 mm) and a weight of about 620 grams close to a real human hand. The starting price is 39,900 yuan.
All motors support direct drive, back-driving and dual-encoder control, and a new little-finger roll degree of freedom significantly improves grasping dexterity. The hand carries an impact-protection structure that shields gears from extreme external shocks, a single-hand load of 1 kg (peak 2 kg) and a peak power of 200W, with gigabit, USB and high-speed 485 interfaces.
Analysts noted that dexterous hands are the "last centimeter" of humanoid commercialization, and bringing 22-DoF capability below the 40,000-yuan threshold signals that domestic hardware supply-chain cost reductions are outpacing the bottleneck of software generalization—a key enabler for affordable humanoids.
