On September 17, the 2026 China-ASEAN AI Ministers' Roundtable opened in Nanning, Guangxi, under the theme "Jointly Discuss AI Governance, Co-create a Safe Future." AI authorities from China and multiple ASEAN countries exchanged views on cross-border data flows, AI ethics and security.
Participants discussed reforming the global AI governance system and deepening regional AI governance cooperation. ASEAN has long been a major destination market for Chinese AI products and services, and the meeting is seen as an important node for regional governance coordination.
The roundtable reflects a maturation of China-ASEAN AI ties—from technology cooperation toward joint governance consultation—as both sides seek common rules for trustworthy AI.
