PORT KLANG, Malaysia, Aug 20 (Xinhua) -- Xiamen University's research vessel 'Jiageng' recently docked at Kota Kinabalu in Sabah and Port Klang in Selangor, Malaysia, holding public open-day events. About 1,500 Malaysian students, teachers and members of the public boarded the vessel, touring the bridge and laboratories, learning about marine science through Q&A and gaining insight into China's ocean development and conservation philosophy.
On Aug 17 in Port Klang, students and staff posed for photos beside the 'Jiageng' research vessel.
'What are these devices for?' 'What do researchers observe on the ship every day?' 'How far can this ship sail?' Once on board, students peppered the crew with questions.
Kota Kinabalu, also known as KK, is a place where locals have grown up by the sea. But for local students, stepping onto a comprehensive ocean research vessel was still a novel experience.
Zhang Xiaoyan, a 10th-grade student at KK Jiankok Secondary School, boarded the vessel for the first time and was quickly drawn to its various facilities. The bridge, laboratories, living quarters, canteen and the array of scientific instruments on deck kept her stopping to look. 'There's so much on a research vessel -- it feels novel and interesting,' she said.
After the 'Jiageng' arrived at Port Klang, Liao Enxuan, an 11th-grade student at Port Klang Kwang Hua Independent School, also boarded for the first time. What impressed him most was the bridge. 'You can see how a ship operates, and that operating one takes a whole team working together,' he said. The ship's operation and seawater measurement deepened his understanding of the physics and chemistry he learns in class.
