Citing Reuters and other media, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, on a visit to Iraq, said on the 21st local time that Iran must formulate plans to overcome 'unjust sanctions.' His remarks came a day after U.S. Treasury Secretary Bessent threatened Iran with 'unprecedented' economic isolation measures.
Ghalibaf was quoted as saying that economic development is closely tied to security. He criticized the United States and Israel for launching an 'economic war' and a 'cognitive war' after realizing they cannot win a direct military confrontation with Iran and Iraq.
Speaking to Iranian and Iraqi business representatives in Baghdad, Ghalibaf said, 'The enemy comes to plunder resources. Therefore, we must make plans to deal with these unjust sanctions so that we can overcome them.' He also called for stronger economic ties between Baghdad and Tehran and suggested the two countries use their own currencies in trade to reduce dependence on the U.S. dollar.
On Aug 20, Bessent said the Trump administration would intensify economic pressure on Iran and threatened 'unprecedented' economic isolation measures. The Iranian Foreign Ministry issued a statement the same day strongly condemning the U.S. threat of new economic and trade sanctions, saying Iran will use 'all tools and capabilities' to defend its national interests and the legitimate rights of the Iranian people.
