Merchants at the Yiwu International Trade City are racing to capture the fast-growing silver economy, redesigning everyday small commodities into products tailored to elderly users and shipping them to markets from Spain to the United States.

In a corridor of the market's District 1, vendors display massage devices, educational toys and other senior-oriented goods. One best-selling human-hand massage device was designed after vendors found that most therapy devices on the market are built for younger users, with forceful vibrations and complicated buttons. The Yiwu version uses simulated hand kneading with constant-temperature heat and a one-button interface suited to older users.

Relying on Yiwu's complete local supply chain, merchants say many ordinary small commodities can be turned into age-friendly products with modest design changes. Domestic orders flow to supermarkets and community elderly-care centers, while export orders go to Spain and the United States.

Smart massage chairs have become a hotspot in another section of the market. A vendor there said her voice-controlled chairs let elderly users simply say massage my shoulders or use lighter pressure, and cost nearly half the price of similarly configured imported models that can sell for more than 20,000 yuan.

Toy makers with two decades of history in the market are also joining in, developing straw-block assembly kits that double as cognitive exercise and companionship for seniors. Industry observers say the shift shows how Yiwu's flexible small-commodity ecosystem keeps opening new niches as China's population ages.
