Man Jumps Into River, Wakes Up and Swims Back; Safe Ending Sparks Debate

A man in Nanning, Guangxi, jumped into the Yongjiang River after a drunken argument with his wife and turned up the next morning, having slept on the opposite bank and swum back unharmed, sparking heated discussion. According to public reports, aside from minor scrapes the man was fine, and the alarming episode ended safely.

Why did he make it back unscathed? Three main factors: he is a strong swimmer, the August river conditions were favorable, and he got out of the water promptly. Several netizens and rescuers noted the man knows the water well and could complete a long nighttime swim, the basic condition for reaching the far bank. The incident took place in August, when the Yongjiang in Nanning is warm and the current relatively gentle, objectively lowering the risks of prolonged immersion and drift. Crucially, he did not stay in the water but swam across, got out, and slept on the grass, avoiding exhaustion and hypothermia.

Still, many pointed out the safe outcome was pure luck. After drinking, the body reacts more slowly, and underwater currents and low temperatures are unknown risks; a slight misstep could be fatal. The joking refrain of 'what incredible luck' masks a real unease about reckless behavior.

Why did firefighters searching all night not find the man close at hand? According to reports, after swimming across he got out and fell asleep on the grass, while rescue efforts focused on the river surface and banks. Limited night visibility, plus the fact he had left the water, meant searchers could not locate him all night. The next morning, awake, he swam back to the starting point, finally letting everyone breathe a sigh of relief.

From a rescue perspective, nighttime river searches are extremely difficult. The Yongjiang is wide with poor lighting at night, and once a victim drifts off the main current or to the far bank, searchers struggle to find them quickly. After the man went ashore and slept, he was effectively outside the 'in-water rescue' scope, so a riverbank search naturally came up empty.
