Changzhou in Jiangsu Province has been selected as one of the first pilot cities for large-scale application of new energy heavy-duty trucks, according to an announcement by the Jiangsu Provincial Department of Transport on August 13.
The city plans to build more than 30 charging and battery-swap stations by 2030, forming a three-tier energy replenishment network covering expressways, national and provincial highways, and freight hubs. The goal is to create a zero-carbon transport demonstration in the Yangtze River Delta region.
The pilot program reflects China's broader push to decarbonize freight transport, which has traditionally relied heavily on diesel trucks. New energy heavy-duty trucks are seen as a key segment for reducing emissions from road freight.
Industry experts say the Changzhou pilot will provide experience that can be replicated in other regions, accelerating the electrification of heavy transport across the country.
