The International Organization for Standardization and the International Electrotechnical Commission (ISO/IEC) have published a brain-computer interface (BCI) reference-architecture international standard led by China, People's Daily reported on October 29. The standard was led by a Chinese expert and completed jointly with specialists from Italy, South Korea, the United Kingdom, the United States, Japan, Germany and other countries.
It is another important achievement in China's BCI international-standardization efforts. The standard unifies global understanding of a BCI system's composition, functional boundaries and typical implementation approaches, providing a common technical reference for product R&D, system design, and the subsequent development of data, interface, testing and application standards — laying the groundwork for the scaled, standardized development of brain-computer interfaces.
The release strengthens China's voice in setting foundational technical norms for an emerging human-machine convergence field.
