A mathematical conjecture that puzzled the international community for over 30 years — the 3D Ghys conjecture — has been solved by a Chinese team using the Scholar (Shusheng) S2 scientific large model, Sina reported. The team adopted a human-AI collaboration mode in which the AI undertook large-scale, complex mathematical deduction, achieving a landmark breakthrough of AI empowering frontier basic mathematical research.
The result is notable not only for the mathematical answer but for the method: a general scientific model handling the heavy lifting of formal reasoning and verification, with human researchers steering direction and validating insights. It illustrates a new paradigm where AI becomes a research partner in the hardest theoretical domains.
The breakthrough reflects the maturation of Chinese scientific large models beyond language and vision into rigorous symbolic and logical reasoning. By offloading tedious, large-scale derivation to AI, researchers can focus on intuition and structure, accelerating the pace of discovery.
Such advances strengthen the case for investing in domain-specific foundation models, as scientific AI moves from assisting writing and search toward genuinely participating in the creation of new knowledge.
