China's AI industry is undergoing a clear pivot in October 2026: the earlier frenzy of benchmark races and parameter comparisons is fading, with technology deployment, scenario penetration and compliant development becoming the main lines of competition.
Benchmark gaps are closing fast. The performance gap between top Chinese and US large models has narrowed from 15% at the start of the year to a record-low 3%, with domestic AI catching up faster than the market expected.
Model releases have accelerated while real usage already leads globally. From July to September, ten major domestic AI firms released 20 large language models, with 16 new models landing in September alone - versus just two in the first quarter. In the week of September 21-27, Chinese AI models processed 62.22 trillion tokens, more than four times the volume of US models over the same period. A domestic model topped a global general large-model popularity weekly chart for the first time.
With the 'Chat' paradigm largely complete, competition is moving into the agent era, where lightweight models, efficient architectures and inclusive pricing have become shared choices among Chinese vendors. Physical AI is scaling too: global humanoid-robot shipments neared 25,000 units in the first half of 2026, up 432% year on year, while a May national standard graded AI terminal intelligence from L1 to L4 across seven core categories including phones, PCs and car cockpits.
