On August 31, 2026, China's State Administration for Market Regulation approved the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation" (GB 7258-2026), which will take effect on July 1, 2027.
The revised standard addresses safety gaps created by rapid electrification and intelligent driving adoption. For new energy vehicles, it standardizes single-pedal braking operation modes, requires pedal misacceleration suppression functions, and mandates high-voltage power cutoff after collisions.
For combined driving assistance systems, the new standard requires activation condition confirmation, hands-and-eyes-off detection, and abnormal operation detection. These requirements reinforce the principle that drivers remain primarily responsible when using assistance systems.
The standard also expands mandatory active safety systems for medium and large passenger and freight vehicles, including automatic emergency braking, electronic stability control, tire pressure monitoring, and lane departure warning.
