Moonshot AI unveiled its Kimi K3.1 Pro model and plans to release the full model weights by November 4, according to an October 24–25 executive report from China Science & Technology. The new model can build games and 3D models, extending China's open-weight momentum.
The same report noted that countries are increasingly trying to draw on both U.S. chips and China's more affordable, open-source AI systems as the two powers build rival AI partnerships — a sign of growing global reliance on Chinese open models for cost-sensitive deployment.
Kimi K3.1 Pro follows a wave of Chinese model releases this month, including DeepSeek's open-source DeepInfer inference framework and Ant's Ling-3.1-flash. The planned full-weight release would let developers download, fine-tune and self-host the model, consistent with China's open-source philosophy that has driven global adoption despite advanced-chip export controls.
The move reinforces a competitive landscape where Chinese models lead not just on price-performance but on open ecosystems reaching startups and emerging markets.
