Artificial intelligence is quietly transforming how Yiwu's small and medium merchants do business. The city has deployed a specialized small commodity trade large language model that provides over 20 AI tools to local merchants, including AI-powered product design, multilingual translation, independent website building, and customer communication assistance.
Tens of thousands of Yiwu merchants are already incorporating these AI capabilities into their daily operations. The tools are being used for product redesign and iteration, short video script generation, overseas customer communication, and market trend analysis — tasks that previously required specialized staff or external agencies.
The AI tools are particularly valuable for small merchants who previously lacked the resources to compete with larger operations on design, marketing, and international communication. A merchant who previously struggled to communicate with overseas buyers in English or Spanish can now use AI-powered translation to negotiate orders in real-time. Product designs that once took weeks to develop can now be iterated in days.
However, industry practitioners remain clear-eyed about AI's limitations. While AI is a powerful tool for cost reduction and efficiency improvement, it cannot directly solve the core challenges of product selection, inventory management, and overseas compliance. Simply relying on AI does not guarantee success in creating overseas blockbuster products.
The deployment of AI in Yiwu reflects a broader trend of technology democratization in China's small commodity trade. By making advanced AI tools accessible to even the smallest merchants, Yiwu is leveling the playing field and enabling its grassroots entrepreneurial ecosystem to compete more effectively in global markets. The initiative also demonstrates how AI is moving beyond high-tech applications to practical, ground-level business use cases.
