On August 31, the State Administration for Market Regulation approved the release of the mandatory national standard "Safety Technical Conditions for Motor Vehicle Operation" (GB 7258-2026), which will take effect on July 1, 2027.
The new regulation requires new energy passenger vehicles to be equipped with pedal misacceleration suppression functionality. It also standardizes "single-pedal" braking systems, virtual operating controls, and activation confirmation, as well as hands-and-eyes-off detection for combined driving assistance systems.
The standard addresses growing safety concerns as China's new energy vehicle market expands rapidly, with smart driving features becoming increasingly common. The regulation aims to ensure that advanced driver assistance systems meet uniform safety requirements across all manufacturers.
Industry experts noted that the new standard reflects China's commitment to balancing innovation with safety in the rapidly evolving automotive sector, particularly as NEV penetration rates continue to climb.
