Marvell Technology has issued Google a warrant to buy up to 12.2 billion US dollars of its shares, tied to Google's purchases of custom silicon for its TPU ecosystem.

The custom chips include inference accelerators, storage, networking, and near-memory compute components designed for Google's tensor processing unit infrastructure. Marvell shares jumped as much as 11 percent on the news, while Broadcom, Google's existing custom-chip partner, fell more than 5 percent.

The deal means Google now has financial upside tied to two competing chip suppliers at once, giving it direct leverage over both. This strategic positioning reflects the intensifying competition for AI computing hardware as cloud providers seek to reduce dependence on any single supplier.

The agreement highlights how custom silicon has become central to the AI infrastructure race. Cloud giants are increasingly designing their own chips optimized for AI workloads rather than relying solely on general-purpose GPUs.

Marvell's upcoming August 27 earnings report is highly anticipated, with options markets already pricing approximately 14 percent implied volatility, as investors look for signals on the chipmaker's expanding role in AI hardware.
