Google has made its SynthID watermark detector publicly available, saying more than 180 billion images and videos now carry SynthID watermarks. The tool identifies content tagged with SynthID, Google's invisible marker for AI-generated media, rather than AI-generated material generally.
The detector is part of a broader push to help platforms, publishers and regulators distinguish synthetic media from authentic footage. Google says the milestone reflects how widely its image, video and audio generation tools have deployed the mark since the system was introduced.
Researchers caution that detection is only as useful as the adoption of a single standard, and that content created by other generative systems remains outside SynthID's scope. Still, the 180 billion figure makes SynthID one of the most widely deployed provenance signals in consumer AI today, at a moment when deepfakes and synthetic political content are drawing regulatory scrutiny worldwide.
