Chinese Car Brands Outsell Japanese in Europe for a Second Straight Month

2026-08-22 The Herald Economy (South Kore30

Chinese automakers sold more passenger cars in Europe than Japanese rivals for the second month, about 13% share versus Japan's 11.1%.

Chinese automakers sold more passenger cars in Europe than their Japanese rivals for the second consecutive month, according to data from the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association. In June, five Chinese brands — BYD, SAIC, Chery, Geely and Leapmotor — delivered 171,630 vehicles, about a 13% share and roughly 13,000 more than the six Japanese brands combined. Geely led the Chinese group with 49,244 units, followed by SAIC and BYD at about 38,000 each. Analysts attribute the shift to Chinese makers' rapid response to European demand for electric vehicles, while Japanese brands remain heavily reliant on gasoline and hybrid models.
