The Beijing Academy of Artificial Intelligence (BAAI) officially released AREX, an autonomous research agent, on August 12, 2026. AREX pioneers a "research-verify-re-research" dual-loop recursive framework that enables AI to continuously self-correct during long-horizon tasks.
The model weights have been open-sourced, with a research experience version simultaneously made available. AREX supports news tracking, paper filtering, and podcast summarization, representing what experts call a major breakthrough in AI's evolution from conversational interaction to autonomous research.
The dual-loop architecture allows the agent to not only conduct research independently but also verify its own findings and refine its approach based on verification results, creating a self-improving research cycle that mimics human scientific methodology.
This development positions Chinese AI research at the forefront of the emerging "agentic AI" paradigm, where AI systems can autonomously plan, execute, and validate complex multi-step research tasks without constant human intervention.
