Electrification is sweeping beyond passenger cars into commercial transport. Data show that in September China's pure-electric heavy-truck sales exceeded 33,000 units, taking a market share slightly above 50% — more than double the level seen in March and the first time the segment has passed that milestone since December 2025, when producers rushed sales ahead of a subsidy expiry.
The breakthrough underscores how battery-electric technology is becoming economically compelling for freight, where total cost of ownership and energy costs drive purchasing decisions. Analysts expect the trend to accelerate as charging and battery-swap infrastructure along trunk logistics corridors improves.
The momentum is being reinforced by new ecosystem plays. CATL has introduced a heavy-truck "electric-electric range extender" battery-swap solution, and the company plans to build 900 swap stations by the end of this year and 2,000 next year, with a long-term target of 10,000, aiming to make electric heavy trucks the mainstream choice for China's trunk-line logistics.
The shift is a clear sign that the country's transport-sector decarbonization is moving from policy intent into commercial reality.
