China's AI open-source strategy is reshaping the global AI market in ways that have surprised even industry insiders. According to data from international AI platform OpenRouter, Chinese large language models have dominated global usage rankings for 12 consecutive weeks as of the third week of July 2026, with all top five most-called models originating from China.
The weekly call volume exceeded 36 trillion tokens, accounting for approximately two-thirds of the global market share. This level of dominance — where the top five models are all from one country — is unprecedented in the history of AI and represents a fundamental shift in the global AI landscape.
The success is attributed to a deliberate strategy pursued by Chinese AI companies: combining high cost-performance ratios with open-source distribution. By releasing model weights openly, Chinese companies enable developers worldwide to build upon their models, creating a self-reinforcing adoption cycle. The pricing of Chinese models dramatically undercuts Western alternatives, making them the default choice for cost-conscious developers and startups globally.
This strategy has prompted what some observers call 'Silicon Valley panic' — a growing recognition that Chinese AI companies may be winning the battle for developer mindshare and real-world deployment, even if they aren't always first on raw benchmark performance.
