Major European and Japanese automakers are undertaking significant restructuring as the electric vehicle transition accelerates. Volkswagen Group's management board has proposed closing four German factories by 2031–2034, including plants in Emden, Zwickau, Hanover, and Audi's Neckarsulm site, according to a supervisory board document cited by WirtschaftsWoche. Meanwhile, Honda is pushing a $9 billion cost reduction program over four years, requesting significant price cuts from suppliers. In contrast, Toyota is moving in the opposite direction, announcing it will produce its next-generation electric SUV — to be sold under the Lexus brand — at its new Shanghai factory starting in autumn 2027, with initial monthly production of 1,000 units scaling to tens of thousands by 2028. Stellantis, Volkswagen, and Renault are jointly proposing a 70:70 EU content rule to require 70% of EV components to be sourced within Europe. (Original source: Gasgoo Auto News, September 2, 2026)
