Preliminary September registration data published on October 6, 2026 shows France registered 65,246 electric cars for a record 41.7% share of new-car sales, more than double the 20.8% recorded a year earlier. The country's monthly EV share climbed steadily through the summer - 35% in July, 38% in August, then above 40% in September. Germany also posted a sharp gain, with electric cars reaching a 34.5% share in September versus 19% a year earlier, up from 29% in July and 32% in August. Across 12 major European markets, September electric registrations rose 62% and reached a 33% share, versus 22% in the same month of 2025. Analysts at HUK-Coburg found that 12% of drivers changing cars in the second quarter switched from combustion to electric, more than double early-2026 levels, as high fuel prices weighed directly on purchase decisions.
