The U.S. Department of Defense announced on September 1, 2026, that its secure GenAI.mil platform — a custom AI environment for handling sensitive but unclassified information — now includes OpenAI's ChatGPT and xAI's Grok for Government alongside Google's Gemini, which has been available since last year. More than 1.7 million of the Pentagon's 3 million-plus personnel have already signed on to use the platform. Anthropic's Claude remains excluded from the bundle, directly as a result of the company's ongoing dispute with the Pentagon over contractual guardrails against mass surveillance use. Anthropic has refused to allow the U.S. military to use Claude for autonomous weapons or mass surveillance applications, and is currently litigating the Pentagon's retaliatory designation as a 'supply chain risk.' Three of Anthropic's biggest AI rivals are now embedded across a 3-million-seat government deployment while Anthropic's access dispute plays out in court.
