Sodium-ion batteries are quietly moving from the lab to volume production, according to the International Energy Agency's Global EV Outlook 2026, as Chinese leaders CATL and BYD push the chemistry beyond lithium toward mass deployment.
The IEA notes that sodium-ion capacity reached about 1% of total lithium-ion capacity in 2025, but is growing fast. CATL signed a 60 GWh sodium-ion storage agreement in April 2026, while BYD has broken ground on dedicated sodium-ion manufacturing. Because sodium is abundant and cheap, the chemistry is seen as a hedge against lithium price swings and geographically concentrated supply.
"Sodium-ion is not yet a direct replacement for high-energy cells in long-range passenger EVs, but it is gaining ground in energy storage and entry-level vehicles where cost and safety matter more than maximum range," the report says. Its lower energy density is offset by lower material cost and simpler, more sustainable processing.
The trend highlights how the global battery industry is diversifying chemistries beyond lithium iron phosphate (LFP) and nickel-based cells, with sodium-ion emerging as a third pillar of the clean-mobility transition.
