European automakers are facing their most significant restructuring in decades as electric vehicle demand falls short of expectations, forcing companies to reconsider production capacity, workforce levels, and investment strategies. Volkswagen Group's management board has proposed closing four German factories by 2034, including facilities in Emden, Zwickau, Hannover, and Audi's Neckarsulm plant. The proposal, contained in a leaked supervisory board document, would eliminate thousands of jobs and marks an unprecedented retreat from Germany's automotive heartland. Meanwhile, Stellantis is idling factories across Europe and Ford Europe has announced additional restructuring charges. The slowdown in EV adoption is attributed to multiple factors including the removal of government subsidies in key markets, persistently high vehicle prices, and charging infrastructure gaps. Industry analysts predict that the current restructuring wave may accelerate consolidation in the European automotive sector, with smaller players particularly vulnerable.
