SAN FRANCISCO — An independent tracker monitoring Waymo's manufacturing and staging site in Mesa, Arizona found 953 Ojai robotaxis on site as of mid-August 2026, of which 684 were confirmed as completed vehicles sitting idle without carrying passengers. The staging site also held 12 completed Hyundai IONIQ 5 robotaxis converted under Waymo's partnership with Hyundai.
The Zeekr-built Ojai is Waymo's sixth-generation robotaxi, equipped with 13 cameras and four lidars with a per-vehicle sensor cost of under $20,000 — a figure that represents a substantial reduction from earlier generations and is central to Waymo's path toward profitability. The vehicle is intended to progressively replace Waymo's ageing Jaguar I-Pace fleet across its three operating cities: San Francisco, Los Angeles and Phoenix.
The gap between completed vehicles and active passenger-carrying units has raised questions about the pace of Waymo's commercial expansion relative to its manufacturing throughput. Waymo has been accelerating both its sensor hardware cost reductions and its regulatory approvals across cities, but the transition from completing a vehicle to deploying it commercially involves licensing, insurance, mapping and operational readiness steps that can take months per city.
Waymo's sixth-generation hardware milestone — a sub-$20,000 sensor suite — is a significant inflection point in the economics of autonomous ride-hailing. Earlier Waymo generations carried sensor costs estimated at $100,000 or more per vehicle, making the economics of robotaxi operations marginal at best. At current sensor costs, Waymo estimates that per-mile economics of its robotaxi service are competitive with or superior to human-driver ride-hailing in its operating markets, though the capital intensity of building and maintaining a large fleet remains substantial.
