DÜSSELDORF — Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles premiered the ID. California Cruise at the Caravan Salon Düsseldorf from August 28 to September 6, 2026, marking the world debut of the first fully electric California campervan — a vehicle that has been one of the most anticipated entries in the European recreational vehicle market for years. The ID. California Cruise is based on the ID. Buzz electric platform and represents the first fully battery-electric variant in the California line, which has been a benchmark of the European campervan market for decades with its combustion-engine predecessors. Alongside the production-intent ID. California Cruise, VW Commercial Vehicles also displayed a California Beach concept featuring an inflatable kitchen module weighing under 10 kg, developed with partner Stuff Bubble, and a convertible bed system of approximately 200 by 134 cm — removable kit that allows buyers to trade equipment weight against driving range. The electric platform brings new constraints that recreational vehicle designers must navigate. Range anxiety is a particular concern for campervan users who often travel to remote camping areas far from public charging infrastructure. VW's solution combines the ID. Buzz's estimated 400-km WLTP range with the option for a secondary house battery that can be charged from the main drivetrain battery or from external AC power when parked — a common feature in premium electric camper conversions. The European recreational vehicle market has been among the slowest segments to electrify, primarily because of the weight and volume requirements of campervan bodies and equipment. The ID. California Cruise is VW's answer to growing regulatory and consumer pressure to decarbonize the wider transport sector. It will compete with niche electric camper conversions from companies such as Ehome and Inno2, as well as the forthcoming Electric California from Westfalia, another historic campervan nameplate.
