As of 4 a.m. local time, 9 people were injured in Saitama Prefecture, 3 in Kanagawa Prefecture, and people in Tokyo were also cut by glass. According to the Tokyo Fire Department, as of 3 a.m. that day, about 30 earthquake-related emergency calls had been received.
The earthquake also affected transportation, with multiple train lines including those of East Japan Railway Company temporarily suspended. However, Haneda Airport, Narita Airport and Ibaraki Airport were not affected.
According to the official determination of the China Earthquake Networks Center, the earthquake occurred at 1:00 on August 23, with the epicenter at 35.90 degrees north latitude and 140.25 degrees east longitude, and a focal depth of 70 kilometers.
