Colombia Quake Death Toll Reaches 289 as Housing Damage Mounts

Colombia's disaster agency reported the death toll from a major earthquake had risen to 289, with tens of thousands of homes damaged or destroyed.

Colombia's quake death toll has reached 289 as housing damage mounts. Data updated by the country's National Disaster Risk Management Unit on the 16th showed that, as of 7:30 a.m. that day, the strong earthquake had killed 289 people and injured 4,187. The death toll was five lower than the previous day's figure, though no reason was given.

As casualty statistics continued, housing damage rose sharply: 26,945 homes have been destroyed and 127,557 others damaged to varying degrees.

According to the China Earthquake Networks Center, a magnitude 7.5 quake struck northwestern Colombia at 10 p.m. Beijing time (morning local time on the 10th), at a depth of 80 km. The earthquake severely affected 32 cities across the country.
