Google DeepMind released WeatherNext, an AI model achieving state-of-the-art accuracy in predicting a cyclone's track, intensity and wind structure, giving forecasters on average an extra day of predictive accuracy versus existing methods. The model already demonstrated real-world value by predicting Hurricane Melissa's rapid intensification and Jamaica landfall during the 2025 season. DeepMind open-sourced both WeatherNext 2 and WeatherNext Cyclones, lowering barriers for meteorological agencies worldwide and illustrating how frontier AI can deliver measurable societal benefit in disaster preparedness.
