US President Donald Trump said the United States will seek compensation from Iran for casualties in the war and during Iranian protests over the past 50 years, days after Tehran demanded Washington pay for damages from the five-month conflict as a condition for reopening the Strait of Hormuz.
Oil prices rose more than 2 percent to over one-week highs as hopes for a US-Iran deal faded. Brent crude futures rose $1.73, or 1.97 percent, to $89.45 a barrel, while US West Texas Intermediate crude rose $1.91, or 2.33 percent, to $84.04.
Trump later said the US had control of the strait and had swept the strategic oil route for Iranian mines. Iran's Oil Minister said the country plans to restore 95 million cubic metres of natural gas output by late September as repair work continues on energy infrastructure damaged in the conflict.
