US Commits Over $5 Billion to 'Genesis Mission' AI Science Initiative

US federal agencies pledged more than $5 billion under the 'Genesis Mission' to use artificial intelligence to accelerate basic scientific research across energy, health, security and microelectronics.

The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) said on 22-23 July that multiple federal agencies have committed more than US$5 billion to the 'Genesis Mission', an initiative led by the Department of Energy to use artificial intelligence to accelerate foundational scientific research.

The programme, established under an executive order signed in November 2025, received more than 5,000 applications, of which 278 were selected for funding. Awarded projects span biomedicine, electric-grid reliability, national security, quantum computing and microelectronics manufacturing. The largest single investment, up to US$60 million, aims to apply AI to advance nuclear facility construction and lower operating costs.

The effort marks a reshaping of federal research funding toward AI-enabled projects and individual researchers, according to OSTP. Success metrics will include breakthroughs in quantum computing, development of frontier and open-source models, training of young scientists, and construction of AI supercomputers.

Officials framed Genesis Mission as the centrepiece of a reform that shifts support away from traditional concentrations in universities toward direct backing of researchers and applied AI development.
