Judge hardware quality from several angles. Appearance: quality hardware has a smooth surface without bubbles, scratches or burrs and even colour — good stainless hinges are mirror-bright, while poor ones have sand holes or black spots and peeling plating. Craft detail: refined workmanship — handle corners are rounded, lock keyholes neat, bolt movement smooth. Performance: open/close repeatedly to feel smoothness; quality hinges open easily without sticking or noise and close tightly; press a casement sash to see if the hinge deforms or the sash sags — quality hinges bear long-term weight without sagging. Sealing: after closing, check even gaps; a paper-strip or lighter test (strip hard to pull, flame steady) indicates good sealing and tight fit. Lock: good locks turn smoothly, bolts extend firmly and resist prying/drilling. Material: ask for certification (304/316 stainless, aluminium-alloy composition); a magnet test — stainless is weakly or non-magnetic, strong magnetism suggests ordinary iron that rusts; lightly scratch a hidden spot — aluminium leaves a shallow mark, poor metal a deep one.
