Rivian has launched a Ghostbusters-themed Halloween software update for its R1S, R1T and R2 vehicles, turning its electric trucks and SUVs into rolling tributes to the classic film franchise for the spooky season.
The update adds themed displays, sounds and lighting effects to the vehicles, along with an in-car arcade game accessible from the center screen. To promote the feature, Rivian released a short promotional film starring Bill Murray alongside a specially modified Ecto-R1 SUV wrapped in Ghostbusters livery.
The themed content is available until November 2. Beyond the Halloween fun, the update is a showcase for software-defined vehicles: Rivian can deliver entirely new experiences to existing cars over the air, without any hardware changes or a dealership visit.
It is not the first time an automaker has used seasonal software drops to keep owners engaged, but Rivian's approach, blending gaming, film licensing and vehicle lighting, is among the most elaborate attempts yet to make a car feel like a platform rather than a product.
